Our easel is open everyday for painting. This morning I spent time there watching and learning about children.
Children are motivated to do their best work when they get to make choices. I understood again this morning that four and five year old children are incredibly independent. These two painters knew how to prepare for painting with a smock, selecting paper suitable for their vision, and securing the paper onto the easel.
After that preliminary stuff they began to select colors and brushes, I imagine that their minds were dancing with visions of what they could create with paint and a brush. The painters were thoughtful, moving their brushes slowly across the paper, standing back assessing their work, and then continuing the painting.
