For those of you who visit our classroom you’ve noticed that sewing is a daily activity.  It’s a language that the children are proficiently using.  Here are three examples of quilt squares that will be used to create our diversity quilt.  Parents and children are collaborating in this project, but most of the work is being done by the children.

The children also use sewing to create gifts for each other on their birthdays.  These gifts create our birthday calendar.  Here is our birthday calendar gift process:

  • children select a birthday committee
  • committee interviews the birthday child
  • from that interview, the children sketch the birthday gift
  • from the sketch, the children sew the gift
