The children have become bold sign-makers. They work tirelessly to create projects. They come back to these projects. In order to have them uninterrupted, they label them. In the above photo you see one child doing just that. We are seeing more of a desire to write and a boldness to do so. The children enjoy the independence of doing it themselves. They’ve learned not to ask us to write the sign for them because we’ll tell them to do it themselves. We’ll help them to sound out the words, but allowing them the freedom to write for themselves allows us to assess where they are in writing skills. This gives us jumping off places to begin literacy work. You could do the same thing at home.
