The children certainly didn’t want the other crabs to be sad or lonely since King Crab died, so they’ve been spending daily time with the other 3 crabs – Spiky, Mom Crab and Baby Crab. They decided that the crabs needed a bit of exercise so they set up a crab run. The run circled the tree house in our room. They children were especially sensitive to keep the crabs safe and inside the run – so they constructed a fence. They measured, selected materials and calculated the result of the run. Much learning happened in this one big activity – collaboration with peers, math calculations, and conversation with peers utilizing wait time and listening. Just the mere fact that 4 and 5 year old children can work out this sort of enterprise on their own shows amazing self-regulation on their part.
