Dirt: Kid Treasure

Working in the soil

Working in the soil

We live in an ultra clean world.  As adults, we’re always telling the children: “Wash your hands.  Use hand sanitizer. Don’t play in the dirt.”  This day was the exception, and they were beyond themselves.  I know they were wondering, “Is he really telling us to play in the dirt?”

Recently, the children went out to the hill to plant snow peas.  They planted them next to the fence that borders the field.  When the snow peas grow, we hope that they’ll vine onto the fence.  Most importantly, the children got to get their hands dirty.  They’ll learn more responsibility as they water, weed, and dead-end the plants.

All of us are becoming naturalists.
